Portland’s Campbell Salgado Studio Receives National Recognition
Photographer Kim Campbell Honored in American Photo Magazine’s 2008 Images of the Year Competition
PORTLAND, OR – January 2008 – Photographer Kim Campbell of Sellwood’s Campbell Salgado Studio was awarded Honorable Mention in American Photo Magazine’s 2008 Images of the Year competition. Featured in the “Personal Work” category, Campbell’s winning portraits include beguiling masked images of her son Tamaio (El Pequeño Luchador) and his close pal Wiley (El Mono Enmáscarado.)
Campbell’s photographs, chosen from among thousands of entries submitted from around the globe, were judged by three distinguished names in the field of photography: New York City’s veteran photo editor Laurie Kratochvil Boston-based photographer and educator Henry Horenstein and David Fahey, director of the Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles.
“I am thrilled by the enthusiastic response to these images from my new El Corazón series. El Corazón is a creative collaboration between photographer and child, which produces evocative imagery that makes strong statements both symbolically and artistically,” says Campbell.
Adds husband and business partner Francisco Salgado, “It’s a well-deserved honor for these extraordinary images. Kim’s El Corazón series creates something mystical, dreamy, and surreal through her combination of intriguing objects and subjects. The work takes viewers to a deeper place and should be shared with the world.”
Campbell finds herself in esteemed company with this recent recognition. Other honorable mention winners include world-renown photographers George Steinmetz, Howard Schatz, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and Annie Leibovitz.
Lisa Martel of Portland’s Blue Sky Gallery comments, “I was so pleased to see Campbell’s playful iconic portraits gracing the pages of the most recent issue of American Photo Magazine. American Photo is one of the photo world’s leading publications, so it was thrilling to see the work of a local artist in the company of so many world-class photographers.”
